Dr. Liene Midori Nakanishi

Dr. Liene Midori Nakanishi is an ophthalmologist and eye surgeon since 2013, having completed her residency at the Hospital da Fundação Banco de Olhos de Goiás. She is certified in ophthalmology by the Associação Médica Brasileira and the Conselho Brasileiro de Oftalmologia, with a subspecialization in Retina and Vitreous from the same foundation. Practicing in Brasília, Distrito Federal, she specializes in vitreoretinal diseases, including retinopathy, maculopathies, retinal membranes, macular holes, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, macular degeneration, and other conditions.

Graduated in Medicine from the Universidade Católica de Brasília in 2008, Dr. Nakanishi specialized in ophthalmology and eye surgery at the Fundação Banco de Olhos de Goiás, an institution affiliated with Lions Club International. This institution focuses on diabetes awareness and provides treatment for diabetic retinopathy, as well as managing reversible blindness conditions such as cataracts, trachoma, and corneal transplants. She further advanced her expertise with a subspecialization in Retina and Vitreous at the same institution, under the mentorship of Professor Dr. Hudson de Carvalho Nakamura.

Upon returning to Brasília in 2015, Dr. Liene Midori Nakanishi assumed the role of a retina specialist at the Instituto de Cirurgia Ocular de Brasília (ICOB), a premier center for the diagnosis, surgery, and treatment of retinal diseases, founded by Dr. Alípio de Sousa Neto. She maintained this position until 2023, when she gave birth to her first child. In addition to her role at ICOB, she also provided consultation services at Hospital de Olhos Santa Lúcia (Ceilândia), Instituto de Olhos Humberto Cunha, Hospital de Olhos de Sobradinho, and at Clínica Midori. Clínica Midori, which she founded in 2017, is dedicated to the multidisciplinary care of diabetic patients, offering services in ophthalmology, endocrinology, and clinical nutrition.

Pars Plana Vitrectomy

A retina surgery involving the removal of the vitreous gel from the eye, allowing access to the retina to treat conditions such as retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhages, or diabetic complications. The pars plana approach minimizes damage to adjacent tissues, offering safer and more effective recovery.

Scleral Buckling (Retinopexy with Scleral Introflexion)

A surgery to correct retinal detachments, involving suturing silicone or similar materials onto the sclera to create an indentation. This relieves traction on the retina, allowing it to reposition. Ideal for complex retinal detachments or with significant vitreoretinal tractions.

Retinal Pneumopexy

A surgery using a gas bubble injected into the eye to reposition and fix a detached retina. The gas bubble exerts pressure on the retina, holding it against the eye wall to facilitate healing and realignment. This method is effective in keeping the retina in place during recovery and is crucial in various cases of retinal detachment.

Vitrectomy with Silicone Oil Filling

In cases of severe or recurrent retinal detachment, the vitreous gel is replaced with silicone oil. The silicone acts as a tamponade to keep the retina in place during the healing process. Removal of this oil may be recommended in a subsequent surgery.

Vitrectomy with Perfluorocarbon

During vitrectomy, liquid perfluorocarbons may be used temporarily to assist in repositioning the retina, especially in complicated detachments. They provide temporary support for the retina during surgery.

Vitrectomy with Epiretinal Membrane Peeling

A surgical procedure that removes the vitreous and delicately expels the epiretinal membrane, a scar tissue formed on the retina. Indicated for correcting visual distortions and improving visual acuity.

Intravitreal Antiangiogenic Application

Intraocular treatments with antiangiogenics involve injecting drugs directly into the eye to treat retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic macular edema. Each drug has a specific mechanism to reduce abnormal blood vessel growth and swelling in the retina. The main drugs are LUCENTIS® (Ranibizumab) and EYLEA® (Aflibercept).

Intraocular Injection of AVASTIN® (Bevacizumab)

This medication, originally not intended for ocular use, is often used as an off-label treatment for retinal diseases due to its more affordable cost. Although it presents higher risks and may be less effective than treatments with LUCENTIS® (Ranibizumab) and EYLEA® (Aflibercept), AVASTIN® is still effective in controlling abnormal blood vessel growth and reducing edema in the retina.

Intravitreal Pharmacological Polymer Implant – OZURDEX® (Dexamethasone)

Insertion of a small device into the eye that releases dexamethasone, a potent anti-inflammatory, in a controlled manner. This treatment is indicated for conditions such as macular edema, uveitis, and diabetic retinopathy. The implant helps to reduce swelling and improve vision, offering an effective and prolonged method to control ocular inflammation.

Pterygium Excision with Conjunctival Transplant

Surgery to remove pterygium, an abnormal tissue growth on the ocular surface, commonly referred to as “surfer’s eye.” Following removal, the affected area is covered with a conjunctival transplant from the patient's own eye.

Retinal Laser Photocoagulation

An outpatient procedure using laser to treat damaged areas of the retina, common in diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and retinal tears. The laser seals blood vessels or damaged tissues, preventing vision loss and stabilizing the condition.

Ocular Ultrasound

A non-invasive examination using sound waves to generate images of the internal structures of the eye. Indicated to evaluate conditions such as retinal detachment, tumors, cataracts, and changes in the vitreous, particularly useful when internal vision of the eye is obstructed.
